AN EX ANTE ASSESSMENT OF INVESTMENTS IN TEXAS GRAPEFRUIT UNDER UNCERTAINTY AgEcon
Elmer, Nicole A.; Thurow, Amy Purvis; Johnson, Jason L.; Rosson, C. Parr, III.
The Dixit-Pindyck model was applied to examine the hypothesis that uncertainty associated with grapefruit production costs and returns is an important determinant of Texas grapefruit growers' investment behavior. Freezes, price variability, and the effects of expanded trade were analyzed as risk factors. An investment decision rule based on a net-present value calculation would approve a 25-year commitment to a 20-acre grapefruit grove, given a 6-percent discount rate. The modified hurdle rate, calculated using an ex ante version of the Dixit-Pindyck model, is 24 percent. The major source of the risk borne by Texas grapefruit investors is from freezes, rather than from expanded trade.

Defining Conservation Priorities Using Fragmentation Forecasts Ecology and Society

Methods are developed for forecasting the effects of population and economic growth on the distribution of interior forest habitat. An application to the southeastern United States shows that models provide significant explanatory power with regard to the observed distribution of interior forest. Estimates for economic and biophysical variables are significant and consistent with theory. Forecasts of interior forest based on the population and economic growth projected for the region are displayed by ecological section and province and by metropolitan statistical area (MSA). Loss of interior forests is expected to be especially high in certain ecological sections, including the southern Appalachian Piedmont in North and South Carolina, the Gulf prairies...

Ecological correlates of serological status for Bayou virus in Oryzomys palustris (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae) Mastozool. neotrop.
McIntyre,Nancy E.; Nisbett,Richard A.; Abuzeineh,Alisa; Holsomback,Tyla; Chu,Yong-Kyu; Carmichael,Joseph A.; de la Sancha,Noé; Dick,Carl W.; Jonsson,Colleen B.; Owen,Robert D..
Home range size and habitat use of seropositive Oryzomys palustris, primary host for the Bayou strain of hantavirus, were compared to that of seronegative individuals from March 2002 - August 2003 in a longitudinal field population study. There were significant macrohabitat associations with serological status, but selection for most microhabitat variables did not differ between seropositive and seronegative animals. Seropositive adult males moved farther (had larger home ranges) than did seronegatives and were larger in terms of mass and testes size. These patterns may reflect the influence of infection on rodent ecology in terms of dominance and access to preferred habitats.

Examining Share Lease Arrangements for Grain Operations in the Texas Panhandle under Changing Market Conditions AgEcon
Gueck, Nicole; Jones, DeDe; Yates, Jay; Klose, Steven L..
This paper examines the profit maximizing share arrangement for both landlords and tenants producing grain in the Texas High Plains (based on risk preference), and determines whether the results are affected by input costs and market prices. Results of the analyses show that tenants and landlords prefer different arrangements in all scenarios. Results also indicate that a tenant would prefer a different lease arrangement in 2008 than in 2005, while the landlord’s preference would remain unchanged.

Molecular systematics of the cotton root rot pathogen, Phymatotrichopsis omnivora Naturalis
Marek, S.M.; Hansen, K.; Romanish, M.; Thorn, R.G..
Cotton root rot is an important soilborne disease of cotton and numerous dicot plants in the south-western United States and Mexico. The causal organism, Phymatotrichopsis omnivora (= Phymatotrichum omnivorum), is known only as an asexual, holoanamorphic (mitosporic) fungus, and produces conidia resembling those of Botrytis. Although the corticoid basidiomycetes Phanerochaete omnivora (Polyporales) and Sistotrema brinkmannii (Cantharellales; both Agaricomycetes) have been suggested as teleomorphs of Phymatotrichopsis omnivora, phylogenetic analyses of nuclear small- and large-subunit ribosomal DNA and subunit 2 of RNA polymerase II from multiple isolates indicate that it is neither a basidiomycete nor closely related to other species of Botrytis...

Remarks on the biogeography of land invasions RChHN
RAPOPORT,EDUARDO H..
The percentage of exotic plant species (PES) at large geographic scales is presented in form of political maps (Texas and North America) and of isoline maps (Great Britain). In the latter case it is possible to visualize that higher proportions of alien invaders are present in urban and industrial areas as well as in maritime ports rather than in agricultural lands. Consequently, it is possible to predict that the ratio of urban to agricultural species will continue to increase in the future. Based on a survey of 200 world floras, a multiple regression analysis is presented in order to determine the importance of different factors in the yield of PES values. The contribution to the total variance was: disturbance degree 55 %; total species richness 14%;...
